Tennessee 4-Hour Defensive Driving Practice Test

Stopping in front of a railroad crossing is critical for safety. The correct answer highlights that you should stop if you hear bells, which typically indicates that a train is approaching. This auditory signal is an important warning that should grab your attention, prompting you to halt your vehicle to avoid a potential collision.

While the other choices also include valid circumstances for stopping, the sound of bells serves as an immediate alert that can warn drivers in advance, often even before visual indicators like lights or the presence of a train become apparent. Hearing bells signals an active train warning system, suggesting that you need to take action to ensure safety as a train may be close to the crossing.

In summary, when you hear bells at a railroad crossing, this is a direct signal that you must stop, emphasizing the importance of awareness and responsiveness to auditory warnings in addition to visual cues.
